For my final project, I’ve decided to continue with the idea of a drawing machine, but with a slightly different take on how to make it. Using the slit-scan camera sketch that I developed previously for my Computational Media class, I want to output the information directly to a sheet of paper via servo-controlled pens.
The machine will be fed by a roll of paper and continue to plot out images as long as it is turned on. Interface elements could include a knob that controls speed, but currently I’m focused on a version that operates at only one speed.
Each pen ‘hand’ has 2 points of articulation: one that is controlled by the servo motor and another that allows gravity to pull the pen towards the page no matter what angle it is held at. Ideally, users will be able to interact with the machine and take portraits away by tearing pages off.
